Democracy Reform Priorities for 2021

The last four years showed us how fragile our democracy really is. We saw how vulnerable our democratic institutions are, and we learned that long-standing norms are not strong enough on their own. Some of us breathed a sigh of relief after the 2020 election, but the fight is not over and the threats to our democracy did not begin or end with Donald Trump.

The 2020 election saw historic voter turnout. This was due in part to the fact that states made accessing the polls easier. Voters across the country had the option to vote in-person on Election Day as always, but they also had the option to vote early and vote-by-mail. Many, including us at Stand Up Republic, supported early voting and vote-by-mail, and we celebrated the historic voter turnout.

Unfortunately, not everyone was happy about this.

According to the Brennan Center, in just a little over one month into 2021, 33 states introduced, prefiled, or carried over 165 bills aimed at restricting voting access. These bills, largely led by Republican state legislators, are aimed at restricting American’s right to vote and their access to the polls. At the state level, we must push back against these voter suppression bills. And, at the federal level, we need to push for reforms that will make it much harder for states to engage in voter suppression.

In order to protect our democratic republic, we must do more than just protect voting rights. That is why Stand Up Republic is focused on promoting legislation that will:

  • protect our right to vote
  • improve our access to the polls
  • strengthen Executive Branch accountability and ethics compliance
  • reassert Congress’ oversight role and its power of the purse
  • secure our elections
  • enhance campaign finance transparency

To accomplish this, in 2021, Stand Up Republic is supporting three crucial bills aimed at strengthening our democracy and protecting our democratic institutions. These bills are:

  1. The For the People Act
  2. The Protecting Our Democracy Act
  3. The Voting Rights Advancement Act

If these three bills are passed by Congress and signed into law, they would institute the most comprehensive pro-democracy reforms our country has seen in a generation. Many people talk about protecting our democracy and defending our institutions. These bills are where the rubber meets the road, and how we turn rhetoric into reform.

Over the coming weeks and months, Stand Up Republic will provide more information about these important bills. In addition, we will share materials and talking points, and ask you to take action by urging your members of Congress to support these pro-democracy reforms.
We encourage you to start right now by asking your Representatives and Senators to support the For the People Act.

Click here, or click the take action button below, to write an email to your members of Congress and urge them to support this important piece of legislation.
